![]() ![]() She journeyed through hell to get here, so when we hear Lovato softly declare “I think this is forever for me,” we’re inclined to believe her.īest lyric: “ I can’t wait to hug and thank your mother/ Here’s what I’d say: “Hе’s beautifully made/ I can’t wait to show you, you’ll see/ I promise his heart’s safe with me.” Trading in her Nine Inch Nails-meets-Blink-182 vibes of the rest of the album for some lighter Goo Goo Dolls-esque fare, Lovato offers the album’s first gooey, heartfelt, sentimental love song, as Lovato finally feels themselves opening up to the possibility of being happy again. ![]() The biggest curveball Holy Fvck throws at you is “4 Ever 4 Me,” an album closer that doesn’t take you out with a bang, but rather a gentle kiss. That dissonance in part makes “Dead Friends” a more fascinating listen - you bop your head and grin along with the music, until one of the lyrics hits you with a piece of brutal storytelling.īest lyric: “I danced with the devil, I made it through hell and I don’t know why/ How am I different, I did and they didn’t, and it doesn’t feel right.” While the song itself is a banging pop-punk jam session, filled with fast guitars and plenty of double-time drum patterns, the writing is a stark ode to Lovato’s old party partners who didn’t make it. “Dead Friends” is the rare Holy Fvck song where the music and lyrics don’t seem to match up. The sweet (albeit very short) assist from Yungblud builds on the blaring guitars, guttural bass and rage-filled voice telling you that this is not “Skyscraper” Demi - it’s something much angrier.īest Lyric: “Came from the trauma, stayed for the drama.” Filled to the brim with righteous fury at Christians who tout sexual repression as a positive trait, the star unleashes their wrath upon them with “great vengeance and furious anger,” to quote another famous Biblical verse.īest lyric: “If pleasure’s wrong, cast me out like a sinner/ I found myself with my two little fingers.”įrom the moment it kicks off, “Freak” promises to set the tone for the rest of Holy Fvck. What the album opener excels most at is selling you on Lovato’s new sound (or rather, old sound, considering her earlier work on albums like Don’t Forget). Giving off strong 21st Century Breakdown-era Green Day energy, “Heaven” puts religious zealotry on the chopping block as Lovato takes on the role of proud pariah in this song inspired by an anti-masturbatory Bible verse. If Demi’s going to hell, then damn it, she’s gonna have a good time on her way there. ![]() “ Hey, thank you for your uselеss information,” Lovato sings, throwing both their middle fingers up at every armchair expert trying to “help.”īest lyric: “Always some kind of expert/ On how to behave.” “Help Me” provides a similarly tongue-in-cheek “thank you” to those who claim to know better, as Demi and Dead Sara lead singer Emily Armstrong kill them with … well, it’s certainly not actual kindness. There is an infuriating kind of internet troll - the person who ceaselessly claims that they actually have “your best interests” in mind while shaming you - that Lovato is done dealing with. Listen to it on Spotify / Apple Music / YouTube “Bones” is a welcome intro to the back half of the album, giving fans a taste of something different just at the right time.īest lyric: “So many feelings when you said her name/ ‘Cause I want you so bad that I need restraints.” Skittering beats meld with the constantly-shifting guitar licks, all while Demi lets her lover know just how eager she is to please them. Let’s get experimental! Instead of opting for more pop-punk or classic rock sonics, mid-album track “Bones” shakes things up with an industrial, nu-metal twist.
