Doing so would require at /least/ double the space (including file changes, etc) I have thought about doing this, but it sounds very brittle and error prone. Yes, you can in theory run them both, but it will be a cumbersome setup where you have the owncloud/seafile clients each monitoring the same folders. Nextcloud/owncloud is intended to function as an appliance/service – just like dropbox. ![]() Is my understanding of Seafile etc and how I could use it with NextCloud correct? I could hypothetically, I guess, run the seafile server off of the desktop and then mirror that the home folders of the desktop using the client app, but that would require using twice as much hard drive space for every file, correct? Because I’d basically be maintaining a server copy and a client copy locally. In that case I’m basically back to square one with the problem I had with NextCloud right? If I wanted to use SeaFile for syncing I would not be able to directly interact with those files on my Desktop server, correct? ![]() As I understand it, Seafile files on the server are in a special format that can’t be manipulated or messed with. And the ability to mount my large Archive drives by the Seafile seadrive function rather than using WebDav or SFTP sounds enticing.īut I’m also not clear if Seafile is the actual solution I’m looking for. It has delta syncing at least, and that seems that should help some with this process. Seafile has a lot of dope features but I def want to have the web gui, user permissions, ability to stream media, install apps, cloud edit documents, etc.īut Seafile seems more efficient for syncing than NextCloud or Syncthing, from what I’ve heard. So, I’m taking a step back and trying to do this process over again as a clean slate, and since that’s what I’m doing it makes sense to look and see if there are perhaps better technologies to use. Syncthing is having a super hard time syncing these folders though as projects range from a few folders with extremely large binary files (Hi poly 3D scans of landscape using photogrammetry), to many hundreds of thousands of small folders with tiny text files ( such as config folders for VScode that have node module dependencies.) My plan is as the above picture shows, to use Syncthing to sync the laptop and the desktop, while having nextcloud run on the desktop and make files available through the web interface for sharing etc. So then I decided to try using Syncthing. Basically the intended use for Nextcloud, as I understand it, is to run the server as a server, and leave it alone, while using any of the files or manipulating them etc exclusively through client machines. As I am using my desktop as a server AND as a client, whenever I change a file on the desktop, or I move something around using the File Manager, it gets wonky and out of sync with the nextcloud system as a whole. It prefers you to do stuff through the web gui or on a separate machine that is running as a client. This has turned out to be a bad solution because NextCloud does not like you directly manipulating files on the machine that is running the server. I would have these files made accessible from the web via the NextCloud web gui, and I could easily create links and share files with people as I chose. I would have my work files in my /home/david/work folder synced with my work files in my /users/david/work folder on windows. Originally my plan was to use NextCloud for everything. Okay So I’ve spent the last couple of weeks trying to set up a personal cloud server, and I’ve made some changes overtime to my approach, but here’s the gist of what I’ve been trying to do currently: ![]() So the Suunto stick is ANT2, which means that despite being Suunto it’s really just like any other ANT+ stick under the covers. Each channel is limited to one ANT+ accessory. Or – if you’ve got multiplayer type applications taking advantage of it. But when it comes to applications that may leverage the USB stick for real-time data transfer – such as TrainerRoad – the extra channels become really important if you have multiple ANT+ accessories (like Speed, Cadence, Power Meters, Heart Rate, etc…). In common scenarios like downloading your data, it doesn’t really matter. You can see the flavors on the back of virtually all sticks in tiny writing – “USB2 Wireless USB Stick”ĪNT1 had a limited number of channels (4), whereas the newer ANT2 stick has more channels (8). Well ok, it left my laptop to take these photos:īut, you may be asking how is it that a Suunto branded stick works with Garmin watches? See, when it comes to ANT+ USB sticks, there are basically two flavors – ANT1 (USB1) and ANT2 (USB2). That includes plane flights, to and from work, and all assortment of wanderings around town. In fact, aside from a few tests in other computers – it hasn’t left my laptop since the package arrived. And the best thing is that with being so small, I can leave it in my laptop 24×7. Just check it out in comparison to your normal ANT+ stick:Īs you can see, it’s tiny. I immediately ordered one and waited for the horribly oversized box from Amazon to arrive.īut I don’t think I was prepared for just how small it is once I got it all unboxed. So back in January when I was alerted to a much smaller USB ANT+ stick that could replace your existing Garmin ANT+ USB stick that you use with your current Forerunners I was pretty jazzed to give it a whirl. She’ll still likely try to steal it while giving me that innocent ‘I’m not guilty’ smile. But it doesn’t keep her from stealing my ANT stick. Somehow that paint scheme she did on hers only works one way in attempting to prevent me from stealing her stick. Having broken off various USB doo-dads from my computer before (as well as smart cards sticking out the side), breakage is a reality, and with it hanging off 1-2” into the wild blue yonder, it’s a prime target for a grade-A fail.Īnd I suppose a third issue is The Girl stealing it. Though largely instrumental and heading towards jazz, the vocal hollers that interject the music, as well as the percussion and clarinet breaks throughout, give the music real edge and make sure it doesn’t leave cumbia too far behind. Fiesta En Colombia was his debut and it still sounds great with signature merecumbe standard ‘Ay Cosita Linda’ opening proceedings. He called the resulting style merecumbe and it became a huge success in Colombia where its jazzy arrangements and danceable melodies were perfect for the dance halls and radio. With mambo, tango and boleros getting ever popular, the visionary composer Pacho Galán came up with a unique idea of combining the jovial spirit and beat of cumbia with the swing of Colombian merengue (a style that blossomed in parallel with the better-known merengue of the Dominican Republic). I dare you to not be moved by such rare delights as ‘Judith’ by Lucho Perez. This record brings together some of his most impressive discoveries with cumbias dating back to the ’40s and ’50s. In the process he became a fine accordion player and something of an authority on Colombian vinyl. Holland spent a number of years living in Colombia where he worked with local musicians and released albums with Ondatropica as well as variations of his Quantic moniker. There have been many cumbia compilations over the years – with World Circuit’s Cumbia Cumbia series doing a fine job of collecting together some of the most popular cumbia tracks out there – but this collection put together by British producer Will ‘Quantic’ Holland is a fine way of getting into some of the lesser known tracks. There are a slew of great Landero records out there – he made very few bad records – but this recent compilation, featuring a wide variety of tracks, does a fine job of bringing them together, especially on killer cumbias like ‘Perdí Las Abarcas’ and ‘Mi Machete’. ![]() His songs, about the harvest season, local characters and daily life for many on the coast, have seen him rightly lauded as a master of folk music. It may be straightforward in its construction, but on tracks like ‘El Garabato’ and ‘Cumbia Cineaguera’, it’s hard to not be moved by that rhythm.Īndrés Landero offered the other major variant of traditional cumbia that you will hear these days, though with accordion instead of flute. This music is still hugely popular at carnival time and it’s easy to see why. ![]() Led by master flautist Pedro ‘Ramayá’ Beltrán, this is simply recorded with the reedy caña de millo flute playing the main melody as a bass drum hits the beat, and hand drums, along with the odd vocal outburst from the musicians, encourage everyone to get up and dance. This list is a primer to some of the amazing cumbia LPs that have been made over the years, focusing on Colombia as the heartland of the style, but with a handful of foreign takes showing its remarkable journey.įor those who want to go back to the source of cumbia then this is your starting point. ![]() These days, its success continues with new electronic-based cumbias being made by producers all over the world, and even a few Western pop, rock and Americana bands – like Franz Ferdinand, Calexico and Giant Sand – having a go. As the ’70s arrived though it changed again, slimming down to being played by smaller combos with electric guitar and keyboard at the fore, with Mexico, Peru and Argentina all picking up their own variations of cumbia along the way. This style would travel the world in the ’50s and ’60s as its transformation continued, gaining many new fans along the way. With a truly Latin American DNA made up of indigenous, African and European ancestry, it was originally played by accordion or flute with drum backing to get people dancing on the coast (something it still does), but it saw its popularity blossom as it moved to the ballrooms of the cooler cities of Colombia’s interior where it refashioned itself as a big band style with hints of mambo and jazz. ![]() With its simple driving rhythm and ‘chick-chicka-chick-chicka-chick’ percussive heartbeat, it has shown itself to be a style that simply loves to travel.
